THE adverse effects of police brutality on black lives is clear – the country’s brand needs more humane policing, in line with the Constitution.
Looking at major and not-so major events that have taken place in post-apartheid South Africa involving protesting crowds – which have almost always consisted of black people – and the security agencies, especially the SAPS and the SANDF, it is becoming harder to argue against those who claim that black protesters tend to receive harsher, less humane, treatment than protesters from other racial groups, especially where whites are involved.
