VW’s low emissions, low fuel consumption diesel-powered Polos have been winning friends for years. Kim Henson and Edward Haggar take a close look at a 2017 example.

With roots dating back to 1975, Volkswagens bearing the Polo name have evolved considerably through the last 45 years, with diesel-powered variants – especially the BlueMotion- powered versions – being deservedly popular with buyers for their especially light fuel consumption and low emissions.
The first diesel-powered production Polos, initially with 1.9-litre four-cylinder engines, emerged in the 1990s. However, from 2006 came the option of a new, specially developed 1.4-litre BlueMotion turbocharged direct-injection three- cylinder unit, notable for enabling the lowest specification/lightest models to achieve CO2 emissions lower than 99 grams per kilometre, with resulting zero rate road tax for British owners.
The engine is equipped with a ‘Variable Geometry Turbocharger’, to provide optimum performance, emissions and fuel consumption levels at both low and high engine speeds.
It is worth mentioning that these Polos have been much praised by their owners for consistently returning fuel consumption figures of between 70 and 80 miles per gallon in real life everyday use.
