EASTER in ENNA

Wait and see”, a young brother tells me when I ask about the programme for the day. “It’s hard to describe it with words, you must live it,” he says, as we enter the little church of Maria SS Addolorata, the seat of the confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows that welcomed me during the Easter celebrations in Enna. But let’s start from the beginning.

I’ve never been a regular at religious functions and rituals, but after reading about the magnificence of the Holy Week events in Enna and their extraordinary historical and cultural value, my curiosity prevailed. I flew to the “navel of Sicily” in search of stories and found myself immersed in a kaleidoscope of symbols and rituals adopted by an entire community to stage the anguish of a mother who sees her son condemned to death.
