As well as traces of history you will have heard of, the collections held by East Riding Archives contain more obscure items that are no less interesting. Within quarter-sessions records at the Treasure House in Beverley, for example, survive references to legendary highwayman Dick Turpin, who appeared in court under the alias John Palmer. Less well known, but of more use to family historians, is a modestly sized Book of Roads by William Watson, dated 24 June 1828.
