Tommy West, 45, was no stranger to tragedy. The brother of Lesley Ann Downey – one of Moors Murderer Ian Brady’s youngest victims, tortured to death aged 10 – Tommy and his family had suffered.

By 2001, Tommy was a father and doted on his children. But on New Year’s Eve, while he was at home with his daughter Kimberley, eight, and son Stuart, nine, his home was torched. He managed to get his son to safety but, in his bid to rescue Kimberley, the pair became trapped inside the house and died.
