Alabama’s progressive metalcore crew enter a new realm
IMPULSE, ERRA’S DEBUT album, offered up glimpses of the determination and steadfast dedication that has defined the Alabama natives’ path over the decade since. With its immaculate production and knack for capturing and holding your attention as one song transitioned seamlessly into another, it was a shining example of how metalcore could be elevated to that next level – in ways that were neither generic nor derivative. As the progressive metal merchants circumnavigated their own route around the expected sonic and lyrical tenets of the genre, finding that balance between the crushingly heavy and the headily atmospheric, subsequent albums were powered by cerebral, immersive soundscapes, littered with monumental riffs and intoxicating melodies.
Erra’s fifth and self-titled album shifts unfurls amongst a barrage of machine gun-fire blasts and chants, while ’s underlying sense of urgency is intensified by squalls of distortion leaving a blackened aftermath in its wake. Erra’s aggression is palpable and their choruses mercilessly catchy. Their range is spectacularly showcased in , with duelling vocals from Jesse Cash and JT Cavey alongside swirling fretwork, as well as slow-burner , its searing cleans fading out amongst lush, sweeping soundscapes. This is the sound of a band on careerdefining form.
