“I’m a slave for you, I cannot hold it, I cannot control it,” sang pop star Britney Spears in her 2001 hit song. Two decades on, the words sound more than, has ignited a debate over the media’s portrayal of the star’s struggles with her mental health and the terms of a court-ordered conservatorship, first imposed in 2008 when she was 26, and which continues to this day. The legal arrangement is typically used for the very ill, old or infirm, and puts her father in control of her life and money.
