STIRLING MOSS PHOTO BY DAVID LEWIN
A fabulous image from the 1960 Dutch GP, a minor classic in the Moss canon. Having put his Lotus on pole, Moss looked a certain bet to win the race until Jack Brabham’s car dislodged a slab marking the edge of the track, which smashed Moss’s right front wheel. After a chaotic pit-stop, Moss rejoined two laps down and seemingly with no hope of victory, but he went hell for leather to reel in car after car on his way to an uncommonly glorious fourth place.

ÉLÉPHANT BY FRANÇOIS BAZIN
Éléphant was the product of the sort of corporate wastefulness we can get behind. It was created by Bazin for Latil, a company with no obvious use for an Art Deco hood ornament. Latil built utilitarian trucks and buses and tractors, and Éléphant never appeared on any of them – but it brought great pleasure to staff and dealers, who were given castings like this to display on their desks.

PORSCHE/MARTINI RACING REVERSIBLE JACKET
The #3 patch on the right sleeve hints at this jacket’s colourful secret: a lining inspired by the psychedelic livery of the Hippie Car, the 917 LH steered to second place at Le Mans in 1970 by Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen.

PORSCHE 917 LH PRINT BY MARK LACEY
Engine trouble ensured there would be no podium finish for Larrousse at Le Mans in 1971, but the Frenchman again had the best-dressed car on the grid, and Mark Lacey’s artwork captures its eye-popping swirls of red and blue paint.

KEF LS50 META SPEAKERS
The LS50 is a modern classic and, when developing its successor, KEF wisely retained the distinctive exterior design of the original. Pretty much everything else was refined, though, and the company claims its new Metamaterial Absorption Technology – a maze-like arrangement of noise-swallowing channels – eliminates 99% of unwanted sound from the driver.

EVEL KNIEVEL STUNT CYCLE
This recreation of the Stunt Cycle was made using the original moulds, so it looks identical to the much-loved 1970s toy, but a modern wind-up mechanism means Evel now rides faster, jumps higher and, presumably, crashes in even more spectacular fashion.
