When you meet with an award-winning musician, the chances of it happening in their former family home, where they raised their two kids, are pretty slim.
Still, that’s exactly where I meet Reb Fountain, 47, as she returns to her old, albeit remodelled, Western Springs digs. “This is a different house! It’s a trip!” she says, with wonder in her eyes.
Reb and her children lived here for nearly five years. She recalls practising with her band in the lounge, which is now two bedrooms, listening to lions roaring at the zoo nearby, and her kids Kalvin and Lola playing Lego with the musicians who passed through like nomads. The trees she planted now stand tall and strong, and there’s a pōhutukawa down the back sheltering the spot where she buried the placentas
