Margarita Robertson has never wanted to be like everybody else. Nor look the same either. A drive for uniqueness has shaped her life and the fashion label she helms, Nom*D. For almost 35 years, Margi has been a force in New Zealand’s fashion scene, creating cool, functional clothing from her base in Dunedin, the city she loves.
“It’s home,” she says. “Wherever I go to in life, home is where my heart is.”
Margi, 67, has a theory that you can be more of an individual in a smaller provincial town, than in a big city. She has never been tempted to follow the drift north, and the Nom*D style – dark and edgy – is very much inspired by Dunedin. “There is a really strong subculture here of skating and surfing, the university and the music, so I suppose subconsciously that infiltrates into my personal style,” says Margi.
Her first influence though was her mother, Zinovia, a Russian-Ukranian refugee
