Courtney Johnston bounces into her office, hair swinging, with a beaming, open smile. When the self-described extrovert and people person told a male career coach she wanted to be in this role, running Te Papa, he told her there were two things working against her: she was too young and she was a woman.
True, the 41-year-old isn’t your typical Te Papa CEO, but that’s because the last four have been middle-aged men. However, some of the advice Courtney was given was blatantly sexist. Working in a management role at Te Papa at the time, she was told by another recruiter that she should get a voice coach to sound more serious as she was “too bubbly’’, and also get her hair cut into a style which might make her look older.
