SAND SOLO

My solo Simpson crossing started out as a bucket list item. I do most things by myself, so riding in the desert alone didn’t worry me too much. I started out by doing the Border Track in SA/Vic on my KTM 450EXC-F. It’s 300km from Pinnaroo to Bordertown and back and, on my own, that took me five hours.

After completing that I realised that I might be able to do the Simpson crossing in a day, so that became my goal. I knew that the KTM wasn’t ideal to carry all the gear I would need, so I started looking for a more suitable bike and decided on a Suzuki DRZ400 because of its reliability, neutral handling and the availability of a 28-litre Safari tank.
