Beloved actician Nicolas Cage has in his recent years become a beacon for a, playing prize ham Oscar Jaffe, you can see a bit of a manic through-line to Big Nic’s scenery-gnawing pomp. This tableturning riff on ‘Pygmalion’ sees the celebrated Broadway wag make a star out of no-talent rube Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard). They become lovers, and due to his chronic jealousy, she casts him off and decides to go it alone in Hollywood as Lily Garland. Jaffe’s luck changes, and he has to try and lure her back to find success once more, and it all leads to a madcap train journey on the cross-country Twentieth Century.
