Debates on exam results need richer flow of data

SOUTH Africans place huge emphasis on the matric examination results from the final year of secondary school – Grade12. A school-leaver’s chances of further education or a job depend on skills reflected in the matric certificate. Every year, national trends in these results stimulate debate about the nature and quality of education in the country, and the issues that shape it.
