My entire life was spent trying to avoid endurance sports. My wife was a jogger and I used to think it was a waste of energy. Then, at 36, she challenged me to a duathlon with our neighbours. It was a 5km run, 20km bike and 5km run in Atlanta. I’d never run 5km and didn’t train at all. The first run went surprisingly well. The bike? I was passed by nearly everyone up this steep climb. At the end of the 20km, I crawled off, sat on the ground… and didn’t finish. All my neighbours did, including a 76-year-old. I thought, ‘I really must get in shape’.”
Not only did that DNF prove an exercise epiphany for American Chip Hawkins, it also sowed the seeds for one of the most transformative brands of recent times, Wahoo Fitness.
