Talking to plants helps

MY husband was very allergic to flowers, and planters were not allowed in our home for over 40 years. About 15 years ago, a neighbour gave me a small pot with about three leaves on a stem – name tag ‘Christmas cactus’.

I hid it well in the conservatory; luckily it didn’t seem to cause problems. So from February to early autumn, when the buds appeared, it lived in the garden.
