Med ical aid racism: anti-heroes and villains

TO QUOTE Two-Face: “you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”.

Statutory apartheid may be gone, but the country remains with vestiges of systemic racism in health services, a gift bequeathed to us by Dr H. F. Verwoed. Systemic? Yes in 2021, almost three decades after the majority population was enfranchised.

There is racism in healthcare services as demonstrated by the difficulty experienced in accessing specialized health services during COVID-19 pandemic by African patients from areas such as Gugulethu; the distribution of health personnel, and many other examples in the spheres of health including training at apical academic hospitals as reported by Independent newspapers.
