Quake remake

February 22 marks the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake that killed 185 people and damaged much of the city, which is still being rebuilt. Local film-maker Gerard Smyth first captured the disaster and the human side of its aftermath in his feature documentary When a City Falls: The People’s Story, released at the end of 2011.

Since then, Smyth has created two web series about the recovery: and . Now, with , he’s created another thoughtful study of postquake Christchurch. This one focuses mainly on the rebuild and revitalisation of the central city, where Smyth lives. Whereas effectively started production when is a more considered piece, he says. “We had to decide on what’s the story of our recovery that coherently tells our story. So, we decided to make the story about the recovery of the city centre.”
