Love and rockets

I’m looking forward to reading Robert Harris’s latest book, V2, which was highlighted in your December issue (Fact to Fiction). My late father was a London fireman from 1939 to 1944. He survived the worst of the Blitz and witnessed some horrific catastrophes. In December 1944 he was demobbed from the service. His discharge letter, from the chief of the National Fire Service, thanked him for his service but said he was no longer required as the danger to London was now over and the enemy were facing defeat. Within weeks of returning to civilian life he was one of many victims of one of the first V2 rockets to hit London.
