Seeing RED...

DEBATE HAS LONG raged about whether meat – the red kind in particular – is good for you and, more specifically, whether it contributes to heart disease.

In December, results were published from a 30-year study looking at 43,000 people in relation to their heart health and red meat consumption. That study concluded one simple thing: men eating the most red meat had a 10 per cent higher chance of heart attack than those eating the least, and it’s believed the findings stand for women, too.

‘There are two reasons why red meat is commonly linked to heart disease,’ says Maeve Hanan,). ‘It contains saturated fat, which is linked to higher cholesterol, and processed red meat, such as sausages or ham, also usually contains high levels of salt, which raises blood pressure.’
