SARA GARBOWSKI

Ever since her first ballet class aged six, Royal New Zealand Ballet principal dancer Sara Garbowski knew it was all she wanted to do.

“I have always wanted to be a ballet dancer, much like thousands of other young girls when they are introduced to the art form. I realised early on that with commitment and dedication on my part, ballet could be a part of my life professionally,” says Sara, originally from Canada.

By the age of 12, she had been accepted into Canada’s National Ballet School, which meant moving 2700km away from her family.

“Leaving home at such a young age to live and train at this incredible school was difficult – not only for me, but my family, too,” she recalls. “The hardest moment was coupled with a very special point in my life.”
