The key to unlocking the stories of our ancestors’ lives begins and ends (quite literally) with birth and death records. And for events after 1837, when civil registration was introduced in England and Wales, copies of those records can be ordered from the General Register Office (GRO). Previously, copies of birth, marriage and death records had to be ordered as certificates costing £11, but now you can order uncertified digital copies
