Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

1 THE DAUGHTER

Nick de Semlyen: It takes some special qualities to eclipse Johnny The Monkey, Kazakhstan’s most legendary simian porn star, who sidelines as the country’s Minister Of Culture. But Tutar, played sensationally by Bulgarian newcomer Maria Bakalova, manages it. She begins the movie as an impoverished, onion-munching, 15-year-old wildling, and ends it as an enlightened, well-dressed journalist — Bakalova sells the radical transformation, and every painfully awkward moment in between. None are more awkward, or painful, than that in which Tutar takes to the podium and addresses a roomful of gobsmacked Christian women about her discovery of the joys of masturbation. For her courage in performing sequences like this, involving real people, in a country to which she’d never previously been, Bakalova deserves both an Oscar and an onion.

John Nugent: Could Maria Bakalova win an Oscar? It seems like an outside shot
