PPE and coffin shortages as deaths rise

COVID-19 is increasingly taking its toll on South Africa, with more deaths recorded this week as funeral undertakers run out of caskets while some healthcare professionals experience shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE).

As the country recorded 32 425 Covid-19 related deaths on Friday and over 200 000 active cases, funeral undertakers, healthcare practitioners and affected families told the Sunday Independent about increased pressure as they battled to deal with the loss of loved ones as well as the rising number
