    HE first Paris-Dakar started on Boxing Day 1978 and finished on January 14, 1979, at Dakar after 10,000 km of tough driving through Algeria, Niger, Mali, Upper Volta, and Senegal. The first car home was the Range Rover of Alain Génestier, Joseph Terbiaut and Jean Lemordant.
