Q We’re planning an extension for our kitchen that will include roof windows. We’ve heard they can be quite loud when it rains. Any tips for preventing this?

People often find the rain to be particularly noisy when their roof window or lantern is improperly fitted. It’s essential for the area around the window to be insulated properly, rather than simply relying on the insulation of the window itself.

You could also invest in noise-reducing glazing. A single-glazed roof window will not fare well under heavy rain or hail. Double, or even triple, glazing will not only help to mitigate unwanted noise but will increase the value of your home, too!
