Q My open-plan living/dining area has spotlights, which work really well in creating good illumination but they don’t feel very relaxing in the evening. Is there anything that I can do to soften the effect? Anada Chen, Middlesbrough

For traditional dimmable light bulbs you can install a dimmer switch into your wall, allowing you to lower your spotlights in the evening with a warm-glow dimming effect. Philips offers Warm Glow LED bulbs, which dim just like traditional incandescent bulbs. They get warmer in tone as the light gets dim. Other LED bulbs simply get less bright but without creating the cosy glow.
