XK ENGINE OVERHAUL PART 2
Reassembling an XK engine is a time-consuming business. With seven main bearing caps, six pistons and two camshafts, it’s important to refit everything in their original order (if such parts are being refitted). Fortunately, many components are numbered, such as main bearing caps, big end bearing caps and pistons; but do remember that Jaguar relied on aeroplane principles, so number one means the back of the engine – not the front, like on most motor vehicles.
Engine building tools are essential, including an oil seal sizing tool (JD17B), piston ring pliers and a compressor tool, along with the usual assortment of screwdrivers, spanners (1/4-7/8in and a metric 28mm socket), pry bars, water pump pliers, feeler gauges, hammers and mallets. Assembly lubes range from petroleum jelly and Graphogen-based lube to silicone and silicone-free sealant. Useful heavy-duty tools include an engine crane to move the block, head and the assembled engine around, and an engine stand. The Clarke engine stand shown in our photographs is available from Machine Mart, but is equipped with a new adaptor from SNG Barratt, which allows the block to be side-mounted so that there’s space to fit the rear main rope seal.
