THIS year started on a high – still giddy over the Rugby World Cup win, South Africans felt like they had the world at their feet.
But then Covid-19 came along. Nothing could have prepared us for the year that was – a global pandemic, lock-downs across the world and tremors in the Mother City.
The one thing we can always count on, however, is the indomitable spirit of everyday South Africans. This year, more than most, the country united and showed once again that together we can do more. Here’s our list of inspirational people of 2020.
MAKAZOLE MAPIMPI
His rise through the rugby ranks has been well-documented and it’s easy to see why – as far as rags-to-riches stories go, his is one of the most heart-warming there is.
Born into grinding poverty in rural Eastern Cape, he lost his mother, brother and sister at a young age. As a child he often didn’t know where his next meal would come from – yet he refused to give up on his dreams of one day becoming a rugby player to be reckoned with.
