The Labour Party’s comprehensive election win in 2020 created much excitement from some, hand-wringing from others and a few spurious claims from the sidelines.
It’s true that this result represents a significant win for the left. Labour scored its largest share of the vote in 82 years (50%, compared with 55% in 1938), and in combination with the Green and Māori parties, the progressive vote received 59.1% support and 64% of the parliamentary seats.
