Diary of an Elite Series Marshal

“DO YOU KNOW how to drive a boat?” Those were the first words Hank Cherry said to me at the boat launch that warm June morning at Lake Eufaula, Alabama. To better understand how somebody like me reacted to this question, you must know this: I had never met Cherry before that moment. I am just an ordinary guy who became involved in an extraordinary event. I participated in a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament as a marshal.

Each marshal is randomly assigned to a different angler for each day of the tournament. I met Cherry for the first time on Day 3. I was grateful to be selected as a marshal for Day 3 because that is considered a super marshal day since the field
