BETWEEN the years 1964 to 1972 Chevrolet built more than 525,000 V8 Super Sport Chevelles. But in 1966 if you wanted an SS Chevelle – you had no choice but to have the 396 ‘big block’ engine…there were no other engine choices for the top of the line SS model. The model had a base price of $2776 and driven by a booming youth market, Chevrolet sold somewhere around 72,000 SS396 Chevelles in 1966!

In 1981 I was 21-year-old, was a member of the Wellington Chevrolet Club, and with a mate, went to look at a 1966 SS396 Chevelle that was for sale.
