Range-topping Titan
Forty years ago, in December 1980, County Commercial Cars Ltd. introduced the 1884 at the Royal Smithfield Show at Earls Court in London. So short were the timescales to get this 1884 to launch at the show, there was only a simple black and white leaflet using a picture of the ‘Texas tractor’ (see part one in the December 2020 issue) and there was no mention in the annual County News publication that was distributed every year at the show.
It took time in those days to have such publications produced. The first colour brochure followed with a picture of the 1884 during early field trials and still on the pressed steel wheels. The 1884 was the largest and most powerful tractor that County had ever produced and, as such, it had pride of place at the apex of the County stand.
The 1884 sat proudly at the pinnacle of a very well-established range of Countys. The top of a very distinguished and incredibly varied family tree that stretched far below it with more different branches than one could imagine.
