We all know it’s not good to drink too much. But if you’ve got a big night planned and you’re likely to have too much fizz, there are ways of swerving the worst symptoms of a hangover.
‘Hangovers are caused by acetaldehyde – the by-product of alcohol breakdown,’ explains Laura Tilt. ‘It’s the job of your liver to turn acetaldehyde into acetate, a less toxic compound, but this takes time. It’s these elevated levels of acetaldehyde together with alcohol chemicals, a lack of sleep and dehydration that are the cause of hangover misery.’
