IF YOU OWN a dog you have probably noticed that when you offer him a treat, he may start to drool, a tiny cascade of saliva trickling to the floor. The presence of excessive saliva (proper term hypersalivation/ptyalism) emanating from your horse’s mouth, however, is likely to be far more alarming as it isn’t exactly the norm. There are two main causes of ptyalism:
Decreased swallowing of normal quantities of saliva.
Increased saliva production.
