Trinidad and Tobago has Indian links
TRINIDAD and Tobago are twin islands in the Caribbean. The population as at October 2020 is 1 399 488 people. Today, 42% are Indo-Trinidadian, who are mainly of Indian descent. In 2000, 20.46% were “Douglas” – mixed offspring of Indian and black parents.
As one of the most cosmopolitan islands of the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago is among the few developing countries and the first Caribbean state to move towards an official multiculturalism policy. There is much cultural fusion in music and food. Diwali, Holi and Moharrum are celebrated by all groups. Labourers were recruited from the Bihar and Uttar Pradesh areas of northern India and Madras (Chennai) in the south.
