“The fizz and sprightly mouth feel makes drinking a great sparkling feel special.”

STEVE LUBIANA

Stefano Lubiana Wines, Derwent Valley, Tasmania

Steve lives and works on his biodynamic, family-owned vineyard. He is a second-generation winemaker and his 24-year-old son Marco has followed him into the family trade.

What is your favourite Stefano Lubiana sparkling? Grande Vintage Brut. Year in, year out, this sparkling brut proves a stand-out. It spends a minimum of nine years on lees, and with a 50/50 split of chardonnay and pinot noir, it’s hard to beat.

How long have you been a winemaker? Over 30 years. My father was also a winemaker with his own winery in Moorook, South Australia, so I’ve been around vineyards and wineries my whole life.

How did you learn to make sparkling wine? I did an internship at Michel Genet’s winery in France after graduating from Roseworthy Agricultural College in SA.

What drew you to sparkling wine? Sparkling is a challenge and the perfect wine for Tasmania’s very cool climate.

What do you like about sparkling? Everything! I love working with pinot noir and chardonnay in any format.

We live on the vineyard – it’s our family home. We’re really lucky that our daughters both live close to our Granton property, so we won’t be separated like so
