The next most commonly encountered type of navigation buoy is a Cardinal Marker, so named after the four main cardinal points of a compass – north, south, east and west.
A cardinal marker buoy indicates to which side of that buoy is the safe, navigable water. For example, a north cardinal buoy indicates safe water
