Call of the koalas

It’s a sign of Kailas Wild’s well of inner strength that even though he makes his living climbing trees and hanging from ropes in forest canopies, he’s actually petrified of heights. A deep love of koalas inspired him to conquer that fear, which is another indication of what makes this compassionate 34-year-old tick.

Back in 2011, Kai joined a University of Queensland project investigating the effects of climate change on koalas. He had been helping to rehabilitate sick and injured koalas at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital when the opportunity to join the research team came up.

“We’d go out and search for healthy wild koalas that had a bit of vitality to them. And we had to get them out of the trees and handle them,” he says.
