The Evolution of iOS Part 1

It’s the one we had been waiting for. Apple’s iOS operating system is the power behind your iPhone and iPad and its 12th major release is here. It was the update that made some real changes and brought the Apple hardware more into line with its android counterparts. So let’s look back to see what it does though that its predecessor didn’t? Let’s take a look at what was new and how much is still around today.

Tim Cook is awesome. During the Worldwide Developers Conference 2018 keynote, in which he lifted the lid on iOS 12, Apple’s CEO took to the stage like a rock star. Steve Jobs set the bar high, but his successor is just as good at presentations.

What a presentation it was too. On that summer’s day in San Jose, California, Cook unveiled three new operating systems for Apple devices: iOS 12 for iPads, iPhones and the iPod touch; macOS 10.14: Mojave for Macs; and watchOS 5 for the Apple Watch. All bring a host of new features to their host devices, and they’re all free upgrades. You can’t get any cheaper than free!

It’s iOS 12 we’re interested in here, of course. The iPhone and iPad’s new operating system is as much about performance as it is about extra features but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing new to enjoy. Let’s take an in-depth look at what it has.

Which iPhone or iPad do I have?//

To identify which model of iPhone or iPad you have, go to Settings > General > About and look for the Model listing. Tap this listing and you’re shown a reference starting with ‘A’, followed by a four figure number. Write it down. In Safari, go to (iPads) or (iPhones). These pages, from Apple’s support site, list every model and their identifier numbers. Look for your own identifier number here.
