The first year of the second decade of the 21st millennium is one many people will prefer to forget. With COVID›19 sparking a global health crisis and sending economic shock waves around the world, even Australia’s geographic isolation wasn’t enough to prevent us feeling the impacts. The crisis has seen hundreds of lives lost and stretched the limits of our healthcare and hospital systems, while on the economic front our economy had its first recession in nearly 30 years.
Amidst this carnage, the automotive industry has been one of the most heavily impacted, with sales figures (in October) showing new vehicle sales down almost 19 per cent on the same period in 2019. The declines have been across the board, but one of the few new vehicle categories to prove somewhat resilient is the light commercial sector. This has been in large part due to a suite of new dual cab utes being launched, along with the extension of generous government tax write-offs.
