Not as planned...

Sitting in a remote car park in France, only an hour or so after rolling off the Roscoff ferry, we had all the luggage off one of the bikes trying to diagnose an electrical problem – this was not part of the plan. This trip had been more than a year in the planning, part of my 50th birthday celebrations, greatly looked forward to... and it was all going wrong, very early.

I've been friends with Jeff for more than 16 years; we share a love of food, real ales and Moto Guzzis. He had ridden down from Newcastle to Plymouth on Friday night, with earphones in, a good tune on and comfortable behind that huge fairing – his Norge really does rack up motorway miles in style. Saturday was spent fettling the bikes, packing, and last-minute purchases. We rode into Plymouth and on to the ferry. Then the bar, a beer, and back to the cabin.

High spirits prevailed next morning as
