WORKING WITH CATTLE
READING the article on cattle trains in the November issue bought back memories of the time I was a goods guard at Shirebrook depot (Derbyshire) in the late 1960s/early 1970s prior to joining the footplate line of promotion.
At Shirebrook we had a number of turns between Mansfield Concentration Sidings and Whitemoor Yard (Cambridgeshire). We used to work trains of coal up to 70 loaded wagons in length hauled by Classes 25/31/37/47, mostly with locos in multiple apart from the ‘47s’. The back working consisted of empty 16-ton mineral or 21-ton hopper wagons.
One day I was booked on the 03.18 to Whitemoor
