Webley & Scott Model 1000 Sporter

WEBLEY & Scott was formed in 1898 when the firm of P. Webley & Son, a company engaged in the manufacture of handguns and military ordnance merged with William M. Scott & Company to become Webley & Scott. After the World War II addition of Greener, Webley & Scott adopted the boxlock principle and began making a line of traditional game guns. The Model 700 Series employed more machine work than normal and the quick accurate cutting of parts and semiinletting of stocks reduced the amount of hand labour necessary. As a further economy, Webley & Scott left out the Greener crossbolt. The resulting guns, were reasonably well-balanced, appealing to the eye and affordable when compared with the almost totally hand-made guns being turned out by old-line Birmingham companies.

London makers too, relied almost entirely on hand labour, but Webley & Scott didn't hesitate to combine modern machining with hand craftsmanship well ahead of their competitors. As a result the company's "best guns" had the advantage of being less expensive, more quickly produced, and of excellent quality.
