Three cheers for Dinokeng!
The Dinokeng Reserve needs no introduction. The Big 5 hangs out there, you can go on a self-drive game drive, and there’s a variety of campsites to choose from. If you live in Pretoria, it almost takes you longer to set up camp than it took you to drive there.
The COVID-19 lockdown period actually benefited the reserve. People were craving a break, and the moment travel within the borders of your own province was allowed, visitors flocked to Dinokeng. The first weekend after the opening, all the accommodation in the reserve was booked out, while campsites for the December holidays were quickly snapped up.
UITVLUGT RESORT
Brand sparkling new
The area’s newest campsite, Uitvlugt, is located just outside the reserve on the banks of the Elands River, about 19 km from the Tau gate. During our mid-October visit, the new owners, Riaan and Debbie Botes, had just moved in and we were some of the first campers.
The resort was formerly known as the Nokeng Eco Lodge and their focus had been on group gatherings. So the campsites, ablution facilities and swimming pool were already here when Riaan and his family took charge, and they were hard at work at the time of our visit to get it
