Last week, it was my privilege to stand in glorious parkland, studded with ancient oaks, chestnuts and beeches, and shoot pheasants. The leaves were at their exuberant best with the palette of reds, yellows and oranges at its most fiery in the gloom of a dreich November afternoon. But the stars of the show were the larches flecking the giant stands of conifers with gold on the hills above
