Golden daybreak

I captured this beautiful scene about a kilometre into Rietvlei Nature Reserve, in July 2020. It was 7 am and -5° C outside the car. I took the photo through the window: mist rising off Rietvlei Dam near the Coots Corner bird hide.

Rietvlei must be the coldest place in Pretoria! The mist column in the background was created by the small waterfall at Otter Bridge – the temperature always seems lowest there. But the golden light made getting up early and braving the cold worthwhile.
