WINNING LETTER

Don't move!

My wife Anesca and I and our kids camped at Xakanaxa in Moremi with our friends Bertus and Inalene Nel and their children. It was our first visit to Botswana, and also our first time in an unfenced campsite. We explained to the kids that they might encounter wild animals and they shouldn't be afraid. They must stay close and stand very still if something were to happen.

This elephant came past our camp one day. Only after I'd taken the photo did I notice the kids – Emma Nel (6), Anneke Nel (10) and Leanke Loots (8) – quietly sitting under the camping table. The elephant was calm and browsed for a while. It rubbed against a tree and took a dust bath – our tent was covered in sand afterwards.

With the washing on the clothesline, the kids’ toys on the table and them seeking shelter under it, it looks like just another day in the wilderness! It was an amazing experience and one the children
