HMS Gannet MEMORIES OF THE VICTORIAN NAVY

HMS Gannet is now on display at Number 3 dry dock at Chatham Historic Dockyard, a short distance from where she was built in 1878. She was one of nine Doterel class sloops built for the Royal Navy, ships of composite construction, with wooden hulls over an iron frame. HMS Gannet was barque-rigged with three masts and had a displacement of 1,130 tons. A Humphrys and Tennant twocylinder horizontal compound expansion engine powered her, supplementing her sailing rig.
