NORWAY’S LAST VISIT TO SOUTHAMPTON

Having read the recent articles France/Norway (SM, May and June), I was reminded of the day I drove to Southampton on a bright and sunny Saturday on 5 October 1996 to photograph Norway leaving port, for what was the last time.

She arrived in Southampton on 11 September to go into the King George 5th dry dock (built in 1993 to ‘service’ the two Cunard Queens) for various works to be done. This included rebuilding of the stair towers and gift shops to comply with SOLAS 1992 amendments; these regulations also required veteran cruise ships to be retro-fitted with sprinkler systems, but this may have been previously done. Other work consisted of a repaint, which included a new livery on the funnels and an NCL logo added to each side of the hull. Of note was that,
